As head of the National Audit Office, Sir John Bourn knows a thing or two about medical negligence compensation claimants, the causes of such claims, the processes behind them and impact of litigation on the National Health Service.

In fact, a report drawn up by his organisation, the NAO, called for the NHS Litigation Authority to have a system which would both handle and prevent a backlog of clinical negligence claims. It also branded the current system as "slow and inefficient".
With this slowness and inefficiency in mind, Sir John Bourn added, "The Litigation Authority and the Legal Services Commission are making improvements to the way they handle claims.
"Implementation of our recommendations should provide patients with improved access to remedies, speed up settlements and cut legal costs."
