We all know about superbugs and the terrible consequences they can cause: illness, injury, long-term problems and sometimes even death. We also know all about how failings related to superbugs such as MRSA often result in the NHS Litigation Authority being considered liable for payments of medical negligence compensation.
However, what many people may not be aware of is that there is a bigger killer in NHS hospitals which is also related to substandard or negligent care: blood clots.
Blood clots kill nearly 30,000 hospital patients each year, considerably more than superbugs and even more than some of the most deadly and common cancers.
And, worryingly, in 2010 the All Party Parliamentary Thrombosis Group found that as many as eight million NHS patients could be at risk of potentially fatal blood clots because of the failure of many trusts to follow guidelines on clot prevention.
In fact, in 2010 it was revealed that only 33 percent of patients are screened for blood clot risk – the actual rate should be much closer to 90 percent.
Director of thrombosis charity Lifeblood, Professor Beverly Hunt, commented, "The statistics are staggering. We are worried that trainee doctors, nurses and pharmacists are not being given the basic mandatory training to diagnose and prevent blood clots, and that is something that must be addressed urgently if we are to reduce the death rate. If not prevented, thrombosis is an indiscriminate and devastating killer."
Furthermore, there are ongoing serious concerns that blood clots are insufficiently reported, meaning that a true picture of the risk and impact is unavailable.
Following the release of the study research director for the Dr Foster Hospital Guide said, "Blood clots kill more people than superbugs every year and yet the reporting of blood clots is just not always sufficient to identify and address the problem."
The Department of Health agreed that the situation was unacceptable, both in terms of patient suffering and the resultant cost of medical negligence compensation. "We are determined to reduce the number of patients affected by blood clots in hospital and to improve patient safety in the NHS," said a spokesperson.
