Medical negligence compensation and ensuring hand hygiene in Scottish hospitals

Despite the fact that there has been a lessening in the incidence of hospital-borne superbugs, the issue of antibiotic-resistant infections such as Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium Difficile is one that continues to plague hospitals in the UK, with a claimants beginning to have some success in claiming medical negligence compensation for them.

In response to concerns that unacceptable levels of staff hygiene may be the root cause of many outbreaks in Scottish hospitals, the Scottish Government has announced a "zero tolerance" on hand hygiene among hospital workers in 2009. As a result workers who fail to follow hand-washing guidelines face the prospect of losing their jobs.

During a visit to Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow, Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon announced, "Hand hygiene is a simple but essential part of our drive to tackle infections in hospitals, for everyone from consultants to clerical staff.

"That's why we are now adopting a zero tolerance approach to non-compliance by NHS staff to ensure we build on the great progress that has already been made."

And, according to surprising figures, doctors are the least vigilant of all hospital staff when it comes to following basic hand-washing procedures. Shockingly, only 84% wash their hands with alcohol gel when it is required. In comparison, the rate of nurses is reported to be rather better, with a 92% rate of compliance.

Sturgeon comments, "Hand hygiene is not difficult and it is unacceptable for staff not to comply with guidance and procedures.

"It simply has to become a routine part of all health workers' daily lives.

"The highest standards are expected and must be delivered."

Indeed, and failure to meet these standards not only risks the lives and health of patients, it also has the potential to cost the NHS millions of pounds in medical negligence compensation.
