Medical negligence claims and responding to National Audit Office advice

It would seem natural to assume that doctors would be the first group of people to ensure hospitals meet hygiene standards, avoid superbug infections and prevent costly medical negligence claims; however, a National Audit Office Report has revealed that in some hospitals this is far from the case.

For, although MRSA and C. difficile are down nationally, by 57% and 41% respectively, certain NHS trusts seem to be immune to government target rates. This is evidenced by the fact that C. difficle cases have actually risen in 19% of trusts, while the rate of MRSA infection has risen in 12%.

And it is doctors who are taking the brunt of the blame for this. A National Audit Office spokesperson comments, "Compliance with good infection control practice is improving, but doctors remain less likely to comply.

"Overall, nurses have been quicker to improve their clinical practice in relation to healthcare-associated infection than doctors, for example with higher levels of compliance with basic hand hygiene. In our surveys, doctors and, in particular junior doctors were viewed by trust staff as less likely to comply with infection control policies, including policies on hand hygiene."

Yet the spending watchdog believes that it is not only doctors who need to improve their commitment to basic hygiene, "While staff are more aware of good infection control practice, and compliance is improving, compliance is still not universal. Given the delay between failure to comply and infection, some staff still do not see a clear link between their actions and healthcare-associated infection."

And, although it is clear that the Department for Health has to spend money in order to prevent superbug infections, £120 million so far, it is also clear that such spends save money by reducing the cost of both fighting infections and paying any resulting medical negligence claims.
