Another superbug for medical negligence claims to handle?
While MRSA is probably the best-known of the hospital-acquired infections that can feature in a medical negligence claim, it is not the only one. Another unpleasant bacterium that can infect a hospital patient is pseudomonas aeruginosa.
This bug is known to be an opportunistic pathogen of humans and plants. It can colonise wounds, burns and the pulmonary tract, among others, and cause blood infections. Symptoms can vary widely, depending on the site of the infection, from a flu-like presentation to visible ulcers.
The organism affects immunocompromised individuals; a healthy immune system usually prevents this bug from taking hold. It is often true, though, that people in hospital do have compromised immune systems, and may fall prey to this hard-to-treat infection.
A P. aeruginosa infection is not, however, proof in itself of clinical negligence; it must be shown that liability for the condition should be assigned to a lack of care or incorrect attention on the part of a medical professional during your treatment. With this bug, this can be particularly difficult, as it is present in the environment outside the hospital, but proof is not impossible to find.
An American hospital saw a P. aeruginosa outbreak in its neonatal department in 2006, in which two babies died. This was shown to be a result of a failure to sterilise equipment properly, and at least one firm of personal injury lawyers offered to handle clinical negligence compensation claims for those affected.
