Cancer is on the rise - numbers of UK cases forecast to grow by a third during the next two decades, with medical negligence claims related to misdiagnosis or treatment also set to increase. By 2020, it is estimated about 300,000 people will be diagnosed each year with cancer.
Cancer is a serious disease and a major killer - 38 per cent of deaths of people aged under 75 are caused by the big 'C'. About one in three people will suffer from cancer in their life
The cost of medical negligence to the NHS is already high - latest figures for the past year show nearly £50 million has had to be paid in compensation claims to victims, with more than 500 cancer cases missed by doctors.
Medical negligence mainly arises in one of two ways:
Statistics for 2006-07 show there are thousands of errors made in treating patients who had been correctly diagnosed and this figure has been growing.
In total, 1,179 cancer negligence cases have been brought against the NHS since the mid-1990s. With £47 million paid by the government in compensation, there is another £50 million outstanding.
When commenting on the upward trend in compensation claims, the Department of Health sounds oddly and mysteriously complacent, almost inviting lawsuits.
"It is right that NHS patients should be able to obtain correct and full compensation," said a Department of Health spokesman.
"An increase in reported patient safety incidents is not a sign that the NHS is less safe for patients - quite the reverse. The more incidents that are reported, the more will be tackled."
