People considering a medical negligence claim may find the existence of the Solicitors Regulation Authority's Clinical Negligence Accreditation Scheme both reassuring and helpful.
The body exists because the SRA recognises that this is a complex and demanding field within UK personal injury law, and thus feels the need to recognise the solicitors who specialise in this field. It is not easy to join, and membership only lasts five years before it must be renewed, so any person considering such a compensation claim may well find it helpful to narrow their search to accredited lawyers.
It should also reassure a claimant that their case is in good hands; it can be difficult to gauge a professional's expertise, and the fact that a professional body is prepared to vouch for some medical negligence solicitors and not others can help calm any worries a claimant may have.
Gaining accreditation
To become accredited under this scheme, a personal injury solicitor must have at least three years' experience of clinical negligence work, including at least 36 cases and 20 hours of professional training over the past three years; an applicant must also complete a detailed form for the evaluation of their practice.
After five years, this membership will be re-evaluated on a similarly strict basis.
