The grandfather of three required several days in hospital and a further operation to his shoulder to rid the area of infected tissue. The source of the infection was found to be dirty instruments used in his initial operation. The resulting damage to the Sussex-based man appeared likely to leave him with impaired movement to his shoulder making him unable to drive or do any heavy lifting.
Although the man decided against making a compensation claim, he did contact his local health authority to advise them of the medical negligence he suffered. Had the man not been otherwise fit and healthy, the infection could have made him seriously ill.
