Thousands of lives are saved every year through tracheotomy procedures. However, when the procedure goes wrong, the results can be devastating and patients may be forced to make a medical negligence claim to gain compensation for the suffering they have endured.
Tracheotomies may be performed for a number of reasons. The most common is to by-pass a blockage at the top of the throat. This may have been caused by a swelling following head and neck surgery, a tumour in the throat or voice box or paralysis of the vocal cords.
A tracheotomy involves making a small incision in the front of the neck which passes into the windpipe or trachea. The tracheotomy tube is passed through the hole and is secured in place with tape around the neck creating an artificial airway which allows a person to breathe through their neck, rather than their nose and mouth.
Although most tracheotomy procedures go ahead without any complications, occasionally, mistakes are made and the patient's health is undermined. Due to the positioning of the procedure, there are several problems that can occur during the operation.
As well as the risk of bleeding and infection, air can become trapped in the lungs causing a pneumothorax or in the deeper layers of the chest resulting in a pneumomediastinum which both require extra corrective procedures. A tracheotomy can also cause damage to the swallowing tube or oesophagus and injury to the vocal chords which can result in a loss of the ability to eat and talk normally or even at all.
Losing the ability to speak and eat normal foods due to someone else's error is particularly distressing and will have a huge impact on a patient's life. Although surgeons follow very strict safety measures to reduce the risk of such complications, unforeseen problems can occur during the operation.
However, if the surgeon or any other health care professional is found to have been negligent in the way they carried out your surgery, you may be able to make a compensation claim for the personal injury you suffered.
