Medical negligence professionals look at the Healthcare Commissions views on London's NHS trusts

Any hospital's incidence of medical negligence will inevitably be linked in some way to its level of performance, and with a number of high profile examples of clinical negligence litigation coming from the UK's capital, news that its hospitals are "falling behind" the rest of the country is hardly likely to be welcomed by the city's NHS bosses.

Yet this is precisely what the Healthcare Commission has reported in a recent survey of English NHS trusts. It said that, despite making some notable improvements, London hospitals were failing to match the improvements seen in many other areas of the country, with two trusts actually receiving a "weak" rating, the worst possible assessment for any trust.

However, what the report may indicate is a growing disparity existing between the performances of certain hospitals in the capital. This is perhaps reflected in the fact that 48% of the 73 London trusts received a "good" or "excellent" rating.

NHS London's chief executive Ruth Carnall said: "We have some fantastic high-quality health services and some poor quality services, which are failing some of our most vulnerable people.

"Our challenge is to bring care up to the standards of the very best for all Londoners."

The issue of staff shortages, commonly observed as a factor in a hospital's medical negligence risk, is one of the most pressing concerns for patients in the capital. The Healthcare Commission has identified this as an area that needs addressing, with a spokesperson commenting, "The health authorities recognise that more doctors are needed in some areas and services may need reconfiguration on behalf of patients. They are already acting on this."
