Medical negligence and washing bed linen

In 2009 nearly 6,000 hospital patients died from the hospital superbug C.difficile, with around 36,000 more suffering intense illness and discomfort with the diarrhoea that characterises the bug; many of the affected patients may be entitled to claim compensation for medical negligence.

Many methods of superbug control have been trialled: anti-bacterial hand-washes, hand washing programmes and regular cleaning.

However, there are concerns that it may be through hospital hygiene methods that superbugs such as C.difficile may, however inadvertently, be transmitted.

For example, mops, sponges and cloths have all been shown to be contaminated, which means they could be spreading infection across hospitals, risking the lives of patients.

In 2005, an independent testing laboratory "found that C.diff spores were surviving in sufficient numbers" in mops and cloths "to make re-infection possible"; similar results have been repeated in later tests.

In 2010 new evidence emerged to suggest that C.difficile is being transmitted through bed linen, with spores surviving the laundry process. This is because most hospitals currently use Department of Health guidelines from 1995 which recommend sheets are washed for three minutes at 70c or ten minutes at 60c.

In fact, research has shown that for C.difficile spores to be killed, sheets need to be washed at a much higher temperature.

A microbiology lecturer from Huddersfield University comments, "You can kill C.diff with hot water and detergent, but it has to be over boiling point.

"We know quite a lot about what's needed because the food industry has done a lot of research on this. They use water hotter than boiling point. The fact is, the 70c in the guidelines is very unlikely to kill all the C.diff,

"This may come as a shock to most people who assume that clean means sterile, but it doesn't."
