It is estimated that as many as one in five women will undergo some form of hysterectomy during their lifetime. This means that it is one of the most common major surgical procedures in the UK. Fortunately, despite the seriousness of the operation, very few women will experience complications as a result of the procedure. However, cases of hysterectomy-related medical negligence are not unheard of and have been known to result in significant payouts of compensation.
The operation can be performed for a variety of reasons, including:
Cervical cancer, uterine cancer, fallopian cancer and ovarian cancer.
Uterine prolapse.
Endometriosis.
Fibroids.
Painful menstruation.
All hysterectomies are defined by removal of the uterus. However, in some cases it may also involve removal of the cervix (a total hysterectomy). A radical hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and some of the vagina as well as pelvic soft tissue) is quite rare but may be advised for some patients. A sub-total hysterectomy is one where only the uterus is removed, leaving the cervix intact.
Many of hysterectomy-related medical negligence involve injuries to the bladder, which, although not uncommon, if undiagnosed and untreated can lead to a vesco vaginal fistula.
Bowel injuries sometimes occur too. If not promptly treated these can lead to potentially deadly infections such as sepsis. Where an injury such as this necessitates the use of a colostomy bag, affected patients may be entitled to receive significant sums of clinical negligence compensation.
Medical negligence lawyers
Despite the best efforts of the majority of health professionals, clinical negligence does occur.
Although no amount of money will ever truly compensate for the pain and distress of suffering injury and ill health at the hands of medical staff, it can at least help cover lost earnings and medical expenses as well as providing a sum to recognise the trauma of the negligence itself.
We have solicitors on our national panel specialising in all forms of medical negligence claim, including those for alleged cases of:
Gynaecological negligence
Birth injury negligence
Sterilisation negligence
Surgical negligence
Misdiagnosis negligence
