Peritonitis can be an extremely deadly infection that, if not treated rapidly, can prove fatal. The infection is often associated with other abdominal problems such as a perforated appendix or ruptured bowel, two conditions that can result from medical negligence.
Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum which is the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and surrounds the organs in the abdomen. More common in men than in women, peritonitis causes the sufferer to experience severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, abdominal swelling and fever. Dehydration and shock can also occur and the onset of symptoms is often quick.
Peritonitis usually occurs as a complication of another abdominal disorder, such as a perforated appendix, or when organ contents - such as stomach acid, bile from an inflamed gall bladder or digestive enzymes from an inflamed pancreas - leak into the abdominal cavity.
Conditions such as a perforated appendix can easily be avoided. Caused by appendicitis, an appendectomy is usually performed to remove the infected appendix before it ruptures. However, if the infection is misdiagnosed or the patient has to wait for a space in the operating theatre, the appendix can burst which can lead to serious complications such as peritonitis.
Other forms of medical negligence can also lead to the onset of peritonitis. During abdominal surgery, nicks to the bowel or other digestive organs can quickly lead to serious infections such as peritonitis which often requires further surgery and a prolonged hospital stay.
When you are ill you want to be able to place your complete trust in the people treating you. However, experiencing medical negligence can undermine any confidence you may have had in the medical profession.
