Medical negligence and seeking medical treatment abroad

When on holiday abroad, the last thing you want to have to think about is being put in the position where you have to make a medical negligence claim. A sick child makes for a worrying time whatever the circumstances, but when you are on holiday abroad, it can be even more stressful with concerns over the levels of care and hygiene.

This was the case for one British family on holiday in Egypt. When their daughter ten-year-old daughter became ill, they sort the advice of the hotel doctor who diagnosed the girl as suffering from dehydration and advised the child to drink lots of sugary drinks.

However, when her condition rapidly declined, the family took their daughter to the local hospital after the hotel refused to call a different doctor to see her. The girl was found to be suffering from diabetes and she had dangerously high sugar levels which had been exacerbated by the doctor's advice to feed her the sugary drinks.

Hospital doctors advised the girl's parents that she was lucky to be alive and had they not brought her into hospital, she would have died within hours.

The girl's father also feels that the holiday operator had "failed in their duty of care" to ensure a suitable doctor was on site at the hotel they had provided for the family. When the family requested for the hotel to find a different doctor, they were told that this would not be possible due to the contract between the first doctor and the hotel.

This case highlights how important it is to seek a second opinion from a healthcare professional if you are at all uncertain of the advice given from the first doctor you sought help from.

Medical negligence can seriously impede on a patient's well being – as well as delaying the correct treatment, a misdiagnosis can lead to the wrong treatment which can worsen the initial symptoms.
