Hearing loss in children caused by medical negligence

Hearing is one of the major human senses. It helps make the world a rich and decipherable place and plays a vital role in the development and learning of all children. That is why if a child suffers significant hearing loss as a result of medical negligence, claiming compensation becomes an imperative in helping redress some of its disadvantages.

YouClaim's no win, no fee solicitors have extensive experience in assisting people affected by medical negligence claim the compensation they deserve. Many of the cases we have helped claimants resolve involve incidents of paediatric clinical negligence, including a number which have resulted in children suffering some form of hearing loss.

The following are all examples of the kinds of negligence-induced deafness that might result in affected families claiming compensation.

Undiagnosed meningitis
Few conditions pose as much of a threat to child's hearing as meningitis. However, if medical professionals follow correct practice and identify meningitis at an early stage, there is usually no reason why the child should suffer any form of serious hearing impairment.

In cases where diagnosis of meningitis is made later than would reasonably be expected, there is a strong statistical chance that meningitis infection may go on to cause hearing-related complications.

Undiagnosed tuberculosis
Tuberculosis has all but been eradicated in UK and the wider EU. However, anyone travelling to African and Asian countries for extended periods should ensure that before they embark for either of these continents they receive a BCG vaccination.

It is the obligation of any doctor consulting a person or family about to take a trip to one of these continents of the necessity of BCG vaccination.

In the event that a patient does not receive this vaccination and goes on to develop tuberculosis, early intervention and a prompt administering of triple anti-tuberculosis therapy should be enough to prevent any lasting hearing damage.

HDN (Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn)
This is a condition associated with jaundice in newborn babies as well as by complications resulting from incompatibility of the blood groups of a rhesus-negative mother and her rhesus-negative child.

Fortunately, since 1969, which saw the introduction of Anti-D prophylaxis, this condition is now virtually unheard of in the UK. However, in exceptional cases some adults affected pre-1969 may be able to claim compensation.
