The psychological effect of a scaffolding accident which resulted in a worker being unable to continue in his former employment highlights the fact that an injury at work may have long-term implications for both physical and mental health.
In 2009, A construction company was ordered to pay out £16,744 after a worker fell 6m to the ground, fracturing his pelvis and suffering back injuries. He said he was unable to work in the construction industry again as a result of the industrial accident.
The man had been removing lifting chains from the top of scaffolding when it toppled from underneath him and he fell down an embankment.
Liverpool Magistrates Court fined the firm £3,500 and £13,244 costs for breaching the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
The 49-year-old father of three had only been working on the site for a few days when the work accident happened and he was unable to return to work because of the "long-term psychological effect" caused by the accident, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) said.
HSE investigating inspector Mark Cuff said, "This incident was entirely avoidable and was caused by the victim being asked to work at the top of a structure that was inherently unstable.
"The scaffolding tower was being used during the construction of concrete columns, used to support the building's floors. It was specifically designed to be lifted as a single unit, but the company decided to partially dismantle it and move it in two parts.
"The firm should have considered the implications of not following the procedures for lifting the scaffolding. Its failure to do so resulted in one of its employees being seriously injured, and it was only by chance that there wasn't a fatality."
Although the accident occurred two years before the court case, the victim was still suffering from the injuries he sustained, emphasising the potential gravity of such incidents.
