A lifting accident at work could cause a severe MSD

A lifting accident at work may also be known as a manual handling accident, and such workplace accidents can cause serious back injuries or any of a number of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in 2001/02, 38% of all reported work accident injuries that required an employee to have over three days off were caused by lifting and handling work - the transporting or supporting of loads by hand or by bodily force. This was the largest cause of over-three-day injuries.

Lifting accidents can occur in any industry and at any workplace - and may be exacerbated by heavy manual labour, awkward postures, manual materials handling and any previous or existing injury a worker may have suffered.

The legislation governing such processes is the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) and applies to a large number of work-related operations such as lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling or carrying.

Prevention of lifting accidents at work has been seen by the Health and Safety Commission as a priority, however, the HSE recognise that it is virtually impossible to eradicate such incidences of manual handling-related injury. As such, it is important that employees should report their symptoms early, and for employers to make proper arrangements for appropriate treatment and rehabilitation of any worker who suffers personal injury in a manual handling accident.

Regulation Requirements in brief
The regulations require employers to avoid, assess and reduce the risk of lifting accidents at work. Employees also have responsibilities and are required to:

  • follow appropriate systems of work for manual handling

  • use correct equipment for safe lifting and handling

  • co-operate with their employer on health and safety matters

  • inform their employer of any dangerous handling activity

  • make sure their own activities do not put other workers at risk
