LHIPEC - a promising mesothelioma treatment?

An Italian mesothelioma sufferer appeared in the press in 2008 when her palliative treatment proved particularly successful.

The woman was suffering from ascites as a result of her asbestos cancer, which caused an uncomfortable build-up of fluid in her body. The usual treatment, known as a "shunt", was not advisable in her case, and instead she was given laparoscopic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (LHIPEC).

This is a treatment in which a heated chemotherapy fluid is circulated within the patient's abdomen. The 'laparoscopic' part of the treatment's name means that it is performed using keyhole surgery techniques; this results in smaller wounds than non-laparoscopic versions of the treatment, and therefore in faster recovery times. This is of great importance in palliative care situations; as there is currently no cure for this asbestos-related disease, the quality of life remaining to the patient should be treated as the first concern.

The woman reported complete abdominal relief following the treatment, and doctors did not find any recurrence of symptoms in the six months following treatment.

The medical professional responsible for examining the woman's care said, "It's an option in cases not eligible for radical treatments, but further studies are needed to standardize dosage and perfusion parameters."

Until the treatment has been more fully researched, LHIPEC is unlikely to be a widely used treatment, but the result of this woman's treatment does appear to point to a potentially fruitful direction of study.

Compensation claims for mesothelioma
As it is often an industrial disease, mesothelioma compensation claims are frequently possible. However, it can be complex to trace the party that the claim should be made against; the incubation period for asbestos-related diseases, including lung cancer and asbestosis, can be long enough for the company responsible for your exposure to go out of business.

At YouClaim, we have years of experience in successfully tracing the company that an asbestos compensation claim should be made against, and a great track record in winning these cases for our clients. If you've been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, you would be in good hands with us.

We can handle these cases for free. We can find the right UK no win, no fee solicitor for your needs, and ensure that you are protected from both sides' fees and costs, win or lose. Plus, you are guaranteed to receive 100 percent compensation in a won case.
