Certain areas of the UK have higher concentrations of workers who are entitled to mesothelioma compensation after having contracted the industrial illness through their work.
The majority involve men who were employed at ports or dockyards in shipbuilding and repair because for many years asbestos was used as a vital insulation material in ships and the workers were exposed to the material before anyone realised the high risk of developing an asbestos-related disease.
Clydebank to the west of Glasgow has the highest rate of mesothelioma cases in the UK, being ten times more than the national average, because of the long-established shipbuilding yards in the area. Other towns within the Strathclyde region are also near the top of the list.
Similarly, in England, the district of Tyne and Wear and neighbouring Cleveland have many sufferers as do towns associated with naval ports, such as Barrow-in-Furness, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Liverpool and Chatham.
Away from shipbuilding, another industry with a high incidence of the occurrence of this work-related illness is railway engineering. Crewe, Nantwich, Thamesdown, Eastleigh and Doncaster all have workers who were exposed to asbestos while maintaining trains.
More obvious centres where contamination by asbestos was common were where the raw material was imported or factories where it was converted into building or other insulation products.
Former dockland areas alongside the Thames in London fall into the former category while some districts of West Yorkshire were the base for asbestos textile production.
Although it is mostly men who contract mesothelioma through their employment, women also suffer, such as those in Sunderland who worked in factories alongside men. Many deaths also occurred in Nottingham, Preston and Blackburn where gas masks with an asbestos component were made during the second world war.
Women have also been found to suffer from mesothelioma as a result of being in contact with the work clothes of their menfolk who had been exposed to asbestos.
Because of the long incubation period before asbestos-related conditions become disabling – up to 60 years in some cases – it is important for potential claimants who live in areas with a higher-than-average incidence of mesothelioma to be aware of the potential risks and to seek an early diagnosis.
Once a diagnosis has been made, the claimant or their dependent family, if they have died, then has three years in which to start a claim for mesothelioma compensation.
