Stress, solicitors and work accidents

While many people who suffer injury in a work accident are likely to turn to a personal injury lawyer in order to claim compensation, like most office-bound professionals, lawyers themselves have a very low workplace injury rate.

The reasons for this are obvious. Firstly, there are minimal hazards; secondly, there is little to no physically intensive work; and, finally, lawyers belong to group of highly educated and well-paid professionals that are accustomed to standing up for their rights.

However, just because solicitors are among the least accident-prone professionals, it does not mean they are free from the stress and strains of high-pressure work.

One survey, by magazine Legal Business, claims that many legal professionals are prey to the dangers of drink and drugs.

This outlook would seem to be confirmed by charity LawCare, which reports that 30% of male lawyers and 20% of female lawyers sometimes drink to excess. The same organisation says that three out of every four calls it receives are from lawyers suffering the ill-effects of excessive stress.

A spokesperson from the charity comments, "Some 15 per cent of our case files relate to drink or drugs, and that proportion has remained fairly steady. But this is of course only the tip of the iceberg. Many lawyers do not come to us at all, or go elsewhere."

While Jim Baxter, editor of Legal Business, believes that some firms should take more responsibilty for the health of their solicitors. "Lawyers are in demanding and stressful jobs, working long hours and earning very large salaries. But unlike banks and other financial institutions, lawyers seem to be left to their own devices," he said.

Of course, these pressures are in no way peculiar to the legal professional. All jobs involve some level of stress and the health and happiness of employees is always likely to have some bearing on a workplace's accident rate.

For those under pressure legal professionals in need of assistance, LawCare may provide invaluable support.
