Some people believe that walking under a ladder can bring bad luck, and sometimes it does, but occasionally it is the person stood on the ladder who is unlucky and their misfortune can end in a ladder injury compensation claim.
For some people, being up a ladder is a daily occurrence and they think nothing of it. A height that many people would be uncomfortable with working at is common-place for painters, roofers, builders and many other tradesmen and women in the UK.
However, height becomes a serious problem for those working up a ladder if the ladder breaks. Falls from ladders often result in severe injury which can sometimes make the worker unable to practice their trade for a long time, and consequently lead to them loosing money.
Some ladders break through no fault of the manufacturers, and are simply too old to still be in use.
Companies which keep old ladders may be putting their workers at risk and increasing the probability that someone will have an accident at work.
Old wooden ladders
The strength of a ladder is extremely important. It's what stands between a worker and what could possibly be a long fall to the ground.
If old wooden ladders are used then there are ways of testing their strength.
Lay the ladder flat on the ground on an even surface and put full body weight on top of each rung in turn for at least three seconds. Listen for any creaking or cracking sounds when you first step on to the rungs.
If cracking occurs or if any rungs break under body weight, the ladder is too old to use and it should be disposed of.
Old metal ladders
An old metal ladder is harder to recognise than a wooden one, since they don't age so obviously.
Many metal ladders are made from aluminium, which does not rust, but can corrode. Oxide layers on aluminium resist corrosion, but scratched, bare aluminium can corrode from contact with aggressive environments or harsh weather conditions.
Many circumstances can weaken an aluminum ladder. For example, if the ladder has to support large weights during its day to day use, it may age quicker.
Unfortunately, it is much harder to tell whether an aluminum ladder is still safe to use.
