Many people in the UK, such as window cleaners, have to use ladders at work every day and unfortunately some have to make ladder injury claims after sustaining a work-related injury.
The HSE information sheet entitled Safety in window cleaning using portable ladders outlines ways in which those who use ladders while practicing their trade, can avoid personal injury at work.
Ladder strength
The safe working load should be marked on a ladder in the form of the British Standard's duty rating, or the European Standard's maximum static vertical load figure, in order to inform the owner how much weight they can carry up their ladder safely.
There are three different classifications of ladder available in both the British and European Standards.
British Standard's duty rating
European Standard's maximum static vertical load
The reason for variation in the amounts of weight deemed safe in the ladder classifications is that British Standards and European Standards have been arrived at by taking different values into account. For example, the British Standard's ladder rating observes the general conditions which each ladder type is used in, and the average frequency of the ladder's use.
Ladder length
The HSE reminds those using ladders that the overall length of the ladder is not the same as the usable length. It is wise to avoid standing on the top three rungs of the ladder, whatever its length, and individuals should try to keep one metre of ladder above the rung being stood on, at all times.
Adverse conditions for ladder use
However experienced an individual is when it comes to using a ladder during their work, the HSE note that there are certain conditions in which using a ladder holds a greatly increased risk of personal injury. To avoid the need to make a ladder injury claim, these safety guidelines should be followed:
The HSE add that should it be possible to safely clean the windows from the inside of a building, then, the window cleaner should do this rather than take the risk which climbing a ladder always presents.
