On hearing news that a computer software company has developed a forklift truck simulator, one could be forgiven for assuming it would be an educative aid for preventing forklift accidents.
However, the programming minds at Astragon had a rather different reason for developing Forklift Simulator 2009: to give non-qualified but diehard forklift fans an opportunity to operate the trucks of their dreams.
And although the simulator does not intend to be a useful training tool and is unlikely to be of any use in fulfilling Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) requirements, it does allow enthusiasts, from the professional forklift operator to the amateur, to experience a taste of what it feels like to "lift and shift" through a variety of stunningly realistic settings, such as a warehouse or construction site, all supported by strong but minimalist sound effects.
For those frustrated operators who dream of driving these beautiful but dangerous beasts for a living, there is a "task mode" in which the player is set a series of loading and unloading tasks to be performed within a specified timeframe.
With the forklift accident risk in mind, there is even a lengthy and complex training mode that provides players the opportunity to hone their operating techniques.
Of course, the game is all in the spirit of good fun, but, who knows, if the software is developed, it might one day help form the backbone for useful real-life training simulator.
Astragon has form in the heavy machinery simulator genre. Earlier releases include Crane Simulator, Agriculture Simulator and Hard Truck Tycoon.
