Any person who works at height, whether they are in a typically hazardous industry such as construction or a less obviously hazardous industry such as theatre or broadcasting, should have their health and safety protected – in cases where it is not and accident injury occurs, injury compensation may be considered payable.
Falls from height in broadcasting and theatre
Due to the casual or freelance status of many who work in the broadcasting industry, health and safety statistics do not provide an accurate picture of the true extent of falls from height in this line of work.
In fact, the Joint Advisory Committee for Broadcasting and the Performing Arts (BJAC) believes working at height to be one of the biggest risks in the whole of the entertainment industry.
Falls
Appropriate precautions, such as safety harnesses, safety nets or guardrails, need to be employed where a person can fall a distance of more than two metres.
Falls from collapsing structures
Both temporary stage sets and more permanent structures can pose a collapse hazard if not properly constructed, used or maintained.
A competent person should design, build and maintain these structures and Regulation 13 (safe design) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM) applies at all times.
Temporary access equipment
Temporary access equipment includes ladders, stepladders, scaffolds, tower scaffolds and trestles. As with all equipment used for working at height, temporary access equipment should be properly maintained and regularly inspected.
Some of the equipment, such as scaffolding, requires highly specialised knowledge, without this specialist knowledge accidents may occur and those responsible will be liable for payments of injury compensation.
Theatre and studio lighting grids
All suspended equipment should be well secured to prevent it from falling and striking those below.
