Avoiding work accidents through National Curriculum teaching
Inexperienced workers can find themselves more open to suffering a work accident, and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has therefore called for good health and safety practice to be part of the National Curriculum. This would avoid the pain and distress of an industrial accident and the costs and hard work of a personal injury compensation claim.
The president of the IOSH draws attention to statistics, which show that "In the last decade, 64 under-19s have been killed at work. These deaths come from many sectors of the workplace, from construction to vehicle mechanics, stable hands, warehouse workers and the agricultural sector.
"The workplace can be a dangerous place, especially for the inexperienced. Employers and young people need to understand this and young people must be given adequate workplace training and supervision."
The IOSH therefore has made the Workplace Hazard Awareness Course (WHAC) available to all schools on a free basis, and a spokesperson claims that "Just by spending some time going through the course [teachers will] help to increase their pupils' understanding of the workplace and of health and safety, hopefully helping to ensure they're not injured or killed at work.
"We call on the government to hurry up and make teaching health and safety on the National Curriculum mandatory. That way, we'll be able to help keep the workers of the future safe and to cut the terrible toll of young worker deaths."
