Working in an industrial environment can be tough, requiring workers to remain alert and aware of their surroundings. Industrial injury compensation is often sought by employees who have fallen victim to another person's negligence.
Employees sometimes need to take medication when they are at work, however, the effects of some medications can have a dangerous influence on responsiveness. One example can be found in people who are severely affected by hay fever and take anti-allergy tablets to reduce the symptoms.
Many allergy relief medications have a side-effect of drowsiness which could cause a worker to lack the vital concentration skills required to complete a task safely. If a worker is unable to pay proper attention, they compromise not only their own safety, but also that of anyone else in the workplace.
If an employee does have to take medication that affects their working ability, they should inform their manager immediately so that they can be assigned a job which is better suited to them.
Adult workers (over the age of 18) usually have the right to a break of at least twenty minutes if they are working for a period of six hours or longer. This break must be taken during the shift and not be taken at either end of the working day.
In most employment circumstances, employees should have at least 11 hours of rest between working days, thus if one shift ends at 9pm, the worker should not start working until 8am at the earliest the next day. Adult workers also have the right to an uninterrupted 24 hours off work once a week, or 48 hours once a fortnight.
If an employee is not given or does not take their time off, they may become exhausted and pose a danger in the workplace. Rest breaks exist so that workers can relax and recharge their batteries before returning to work, without this opportunity, employees can become strained and their work may suffer as a result.
To reduce the risk of an industrial accident occurring, employers should ensure that their workers are alert and capable of carrying out the jobs assigned to them.
