After more than a century since the birth of economic thinker Fritz Schumacher, former chief economic adviser of the UK Coal Board, his ideas still hold currency and can even today be found at the forefront of industrial and economic policy – indeed, it is entirely possible that without Schumacher's ideas the rate of industrial injury compensation claims would actually be higher than it is today.
Much of Schumacher's innovation lies in his commitment to intermediate technologies, namely, those that build a bridge between the depersonalised and psychologically inaccessible technologies of industrialised processes and those that are small and linked to the personalised tools and processes of our ancestors.
Schumacher's view of industrial processes, whether they occur in factories, energy plants, construction sites or other places is that they are, "Mechanical, artificial, divorced from nature [and] utilizing only the smallest part of man's potential capabilities."
Furthermore, Schumacher states, industrial processes "sentence the great majority of workers to spending their lives in a way which contains no worthy challenge, no stimulus to self-perfection, no chance of development, no element of Beauty, Truth, or Goodness."
Although at first glance it might seem hard to understand how this might connect to the rate of industrial injury compensation claims, closer inspection shows us how is ideal, smallness, can contribute to more humane processes that empower workers and make them less likely to fall victim to the violences inherent in the industrialised process.
In Schumacher's view, industrialised processes are more likely to result in accidents because they become "meaningless, boring, stultifying, or nerve-racking for the worker.
This he says, is "little short of criminal; it would indicate a greater concern with goods than with people, an evil lack of compassion and a soul-destroying degree of attachment to the most primitive side of this worldly existence."
