Industrial injury and pressurised gas danger

Gas cylinders are used in many different trades and are very dangerous. Any employees working with or near pressurised gas canisters should receive the correct health and safety training otherwise this could result in an industrial injury and a compensation claim.

Utilised during chemical processing, welding, flame cutting, fuel for vehicles such as forklift trucks, and during water treatment, to name just a few applications of pressurised gasses, the hazards presented by poor handling, storage, installation or maintenance are great.

If a canister is faulty in some way and has not been safety checked, or if cylinders are handled incorrectly by workers, the resulting accident could cause severe personal injury or death to the people involved.

An explosion or rapid release of compressed gas could lead to a member of staff hurting themselves as they are thrown back by the blast, or parts of the gas cylinder and other flying debris disturbed by the rush of gas could strike the worker and cause them injury too.

Furthermore, if the gas inside the cylinder is volatile, contact with the gas itself could cause the person harm, or a fire could commence in which more workers uninvolved in the initial incident are harmed by smoke or flames.

The first precautionary measure taken to avoid such accidents from occurring, is that the canisters "must be designed and manufactured to an approved standard to withstand everyday use and to prevent danger," as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states.

If the accident at work is caused due to poor manufacture, any compensation claims made are likely to be product liability cases.

Secondly, the HSE states that staff should be "suitably trained and have the necessary skills to carry out their job safely. They should understand the risks associated with the gas cylinder and its contents". Failure on an employer's part to correctly train staff could result in work injury claims.
