Tinnitus compensation claims and the effects of mobile phones

Mobile phones have become an essential tool of modern life with more than 4.6 billion people in the world holding a mobile phone subscription. While they certainly have their uses, research in 2010 showed that they can be harmful to the user's hearing and could lead to tinnitus compensation claims.

The study published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that people who used their mobile phone for ten minutes a day were 70% more likely to suffer from tinnitus than someone who did not.

The findings also showed that those who used their mobile phones in both ears, as well as those who had been using a mobile for four years or more were twice as likely to have tinnitus.

The number of people suffering from tinnitus is increasing and this research may help to explain why. It is believed that the microwave energy produced by the phones might be damaging to the ear leading to the ringing sensation that tinnitus causes.

A researcher at the Institute of Environmental Health at the University of Vienna conducted a study comparing 100 people with tinnitus against 100 people without the condition. The findings showed that there was some correlation between high intensity mobile phone use and the condition.

Tinnitus is a debilitating condition that affects around five million people in the UK. Sufferers may constantly hear a roaring, or high pitched ringing sound, in one or both ears which is commonly cause by damage to the hearing through trauma or exposure to loud noise.

If you are subjected to loud noise at work, your employer should provide you with adequate ear defenders to help protect you from hearing damage. If you have suffered hearing damage due to noise at work, you could be eligible to make a compensation claim.
