Could broccoli make your tinnitus worse?

Whatever its cause, the constant presence of noise in the ears that some tinnitus sufferers must endure can make life very difficult. This means that it can be valuable to know what alleviates the symptoms, even though, sadly, not all sufferers find the same things give auditory relief.

One known cause of tinnitus is the ingestion of salicylates and similar chemicals. A salicylate compound, for example, has been used to induce tinnitus in rats for scientific experiments by deafness researchers. Some sufferers have found that reducing their salicylate intake can help reduce their tinnitus symptoms.

Salicylates and similar compounds are contained in drugs like aspirin and some anti-depressants. They can also be found in certain foods, including: very ripe bananas; hot curries; avocados; soy-based foods; cranberry juice; broccoli; berries, sultanas and raisins; wintergreen; strawberries; radishes; and tinned tomatoes. Quinine, also containing salicylate, is the source of the distinctive taste in tonic water.

While reducing intake of these foods has helped some sufferers, it is not guaranteed to do so. It is also worth noticing that several of these foods are among the popular fruits and vegetables in the UK, meaning that cutting back on salicylates may also result in cutting back on vitamin C and fibre, resulting in bad effects on dietary health.
