The possible links between tinnitus and mobiles

Just as society starts to realise the benefits of health and safety legislation such as the Noise at Work Regulations and the rates of occupational injuries such as tinnitus go down, so too do new challenges emerge, meaning health and safety practitioners must never rest on their laurels.

For example, in 2010, at a time when the rate of new cases of industrial deafness was beginning to slow, scientists from the Institute of Environmental Health, Center for Public Health, Medical University of Vienna conducted a study into the links between mobile telephone use and tinnitus.

Until this point, there had been very limited research into this area. Yes, many knew that the condition could be caused by medical factors such as disease, disorders, retrocochlear complications and vascular pathologies, as well as factors related to occupational noise, but no one had before considered what kind of impact was being caused by a device as ubiquitous and innocuous-seeming as the mobile telephone.

Although the Austrian study did not draw any definitive conclusions about links between mobile telephone use and this particular form of industrial deafness, it did observe a link between prolonged mobile telephone use (over 4 years or more), describing the risk as "significantly elevated".

However, there is no indication that mobile telephones will be featuring in tinnitus-related no win, no fee claims any time soon.

"Mobile telephone technology is an interesting area," comments YouClaim's injury litigation spokesperson.

He adds, "As with many newish technologies, it is still not clear what kind of impact they have on users. Indeed, it may be a decade or more before there is consensus about the possible links between mobile phone use, brain tumours, deafness and other health conditions."
