Tinnitus and sex life

Tinnitus affects sufferers at every conceivable level of their personal and professional relationships. Naturally, this also means that it can interfere with the fullness and freedom of sufferers' love lives.

A Royal National Institute for the Deaf survey revealed that, not surprisingly, 41% of people with the condition believe that it has a negative effect on the relationships they have with their partners or spouses. 27% of participants attributed this to reduced libido. Anecdotally, this is no surprise either, as it is not uncommon for those with the condition, especially new sufferers, to report being put off intimate relations by the distraction of their symptoms.

However, for those who do manage to get themselves in the mood, the effects of an unimpaired bedroom life on tinnitus can be positive. Some people report a complete cessation in awareness of their symptoms while engaged in the act of sexual union. Also, with the effect a full and active sex life has on lowering anxiety being well-known, and the effect anxiety has on heightening the sensation of symptoms fully documented, it doesn't take a genius to put two and two together.

But it can be a complex situation. If people are too stressed to have sex, they will have little scope for lowering anxiety in this way. Ewart Davis, chairman of the British Tinnitus Association comments, "Although tinnitus is not life threatening, it can be very stressful and have an overwhelming affect on people's lives, as the survey results show.

"There are many ways to manage tinnitus, so the effect on people's lives can be greatly reduced. It is important for people who experience tinnitus to know that the BTA and RNID can offer the support and advice that is needed to take control of the condition."
