Tinnitus and damaged personal relationships

While tinnitus is clearly an unpleasant condition for its sufferers, its effects are not necessarily restrained to the sufferers themselves. A widely covered survey of UK tinnitus sufferers from 2006 showed that over 40% of people suffering from the condition felt that their personal relationships had been affected by their condition.

A vast majority, over 75%, found that the stress caused by tinnitus had a negative effect on their personal relationships. Further to this, one of the major reasons given for this was the experience of a partner who did not understand the seriousness of the condition.

As tinnitus and depression are frequently linked - although there remains a dispute over whether tinnitus causes depression or vice versa - and depression can also affect relationship issues, there may be a more complex explanation than the simple statement that tinnitus causes relationship problems, but this makes those problems no less real.

It is, therefore, a good idea to seek treatment for tinnitus, and for depression if necessary. One Danish psychologist, however, expanded that suggestion from the survey to include the importance of communication between partners about the effects that tinnitus is having on their relationship. Like habituation therapy, it would not remove the symptoms but it may reduce their effects on the relationship.
