In 2010 the Norwegian Institute of Public Health published the details of a study into the hereditary component of tinnitus, the findings of which strengthened the case for paying out tinnitus compensation to workers suffering from the condition.
Many people have previously postulated that the hearing loss condition may have strong genetic factor. However, the study, which was reported in the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, found that only 11% of tinnitus cases have heritability as a factor, with the remaining 89% caused by environmental factors.
The study's authors concluded, "Our results do not necessarily mean that genetic effects are unimportant for all forms of tinnitus, because this symptom can arise from a wide variety of underlying diseases.
"Considering the heterogeneous origin of tinnitus, rather than searching for the genes responsible for tinnitus in general, future investigators need to identify subgroups of individuals affected by tinnitus with specific causes. Our results do not support the spending of large amounts of time and resources to identify the genes that code for tinnitus in general."
A spokesperson from no win, no fee tinnitus compensation specialists YouClaim said that the study "reaffirms what we've all known for a long time: tinnitus is caused by external factors such as excessive noise in the workplace."
"All employers," he added, "have a duty to protect the hearing of workers. This obligation is laid out in the Noise at Work Regulations. The fact that scientists have reported the condition as having very low heritability can only help claimants and strengthen the integrity and credibility of their compensation claims."
