Smokers warned that noise-induced hearing loss may become worse

Noise-induced hearing loss is usually the result of continuous or sudden exposure to loud sound which damages the delicate inner ear, and now scientists have said that smoking cigarettes can worsen the condition.

In the 21st Century most employers are aware of the need to protect employees from suffering industrial deafness by insisting on ear defender use and installing baffles for noisy machinery. Workers, too, have become more aware of the importance of looking after their hearing.

However, research at several US universities may cause smokers to think again about their habits outside work and how they affect overall health.

Statistics show that people who smoke are more likely to develop hearing loss as they age compared with non-smokers - up to a 70% greater risk, in fact and children under three are reported to have a greater frequency of middle ear infections if their parents smoke than those who don't.

Although it is not completely understood how smoking can increase deafness, a number of factors are believed to be involved.

One of these is that smoking reduces levels of oxygen in the body and this could include those in the cochlea where tissue damage could occur. Nicotine may impair interaction in the auditory nerves and it is possible that young people who smoke may be at greater risk of harm from this cause because their hearing mechanisms are not fully developed.

The cumulative effect of many years of working in a noisy environment allied to general hearing loss through ageing will be compounded by smoking, say the researchers.

Because noise-induced hearing loss is irreversible, anything which can be done to reduce its incidence, both in the workplace and on a personal basis, should be adopted by those who value their long-term health. However, if deafness is as a result of the failings of another person or organisation, such as an employer, a sufferer may have recourse through making a compensation claim via a personal injury solicitor.
