Sensorineural hearing loss and making an industrial deafness compensation claim

Many people expect a certain level of hearing deterioration as they grow older (presbycusis), however, if this drop in hearing ability has been caused by excessive noise at work, where the microscopic hairs of the inner ear have been damaged (sensorineural hearing loss), then the sufferer may be able to make a claim for industrial deafness compensation.

The hair cells should be responsible for conducting sound waves to the cochlear nerve and once damaged it may be difficult for the hearing loss victim to be able to hear high pitched sound.

Words with higher pitched letter pronunciation, such as "s" and "th" become more challenging to hear and comprehend clearly.

Women's voices, because of their generally higher pitch, become more difficult to hear as does birdsong and general conversation in a noisy environment like a busy pub or a restaurant.

Sensorineural hearing loss may appear gradually and many sufferers may well not recognise that it might have been caused by a noisy environment in which they worked many years before.

Rehabilitation after sensorineural hearing loss
Nancy Tye-Murray, Ph.D., and Audiologist at Washington University in St.Louis, has teamed up with a cognitive psychologist and a languages expert to develop a computer-based listening programme for hearing loss sufferers.

The programme aims to teach sufferers a new way to interpret speech patterns in noisy environments by showing them how to recognise easily confused syllables, such as "ma" and "ba".

Programme users are also taught how to use the context of a conversation and rhythm of speech to help with sound interpretation.

Unlike current surgery or hospital based hearing rehabilitation programmes, which can be boring and difficult to access for some patients, the aim for this experimental technique is for it to eventually be a PC course, available over the internet, for hearing loss sufferers to carry out at home in their own time.
