Industrial deafness occurs when a worker is overexposed to loud noise at work. Employers have a legal duty to train and protect those workers whose jobs mean they will be in noisy work areas or carrying out procedures that involve high decibels.
The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) is a charitable organisation working on behalf of the UK's 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people.
Their website offers tips on protecting your hearing . They say:
Protection
If noise levels ever cause pain or discomfort in your ears, you should use ear plugs, take regular breaks from the noise, or, if you are unable to moderate the sound, leave immediately. If you can't talk to someone 2 metres away from you without shouting, the noise levels in the area are likely to be at worryingly high levels.
If your work environment is noisy, you are protected by health and safety regulations. Your manager or employer should be able to offer appropriate training and ear protection. If you are given hearing protection, use it. If it has been provided and you chose not to use it as you have been instructed, you might be unable to make a compensation claim for industrial deafness should your hearing be damaged.
Ear care
Cleaning your ears by inserting ear buds, flannels or by administering non-prescription drops may do more harm than good. The only cleaning your ears need is gentle wiping of the surface of the pinna (outside of the ear) with a clean cloth.
Hearing checks
If you work in a high risk industry for noise induced hearing loss it is worthwhile getting your hearing checked once a year as hearing loss occurs over time and can be imperceptible. If you notice any change in your hearing, such as the development of tinnitus, or you experience pain in your ears you should visit your doctor as soon as possible.
The RNID's website offers a hearing check service and advice on all aspects of hearing loss.
