Noise induced hearing loss in the workplace and asymmetrical deafness

Making a compensation claim for workplace-related noise induced hearing loss will sometimes be for deafness in both ears (symmetrical deafness) or deafness in one ear (asymmetrical hearing loss).

While symmetrical deafness is more often than not likely to be caused by long-term and cumulative exposure to excessively loud occupational environments, the causes of asymmetrical deafness can be more easily traceable to specific hazards.

Certain forms of asymmetrical neurological hearing loss are caused by head trauma. Whether this is caused by a car accident, a fall from height, an object falling from height or some other form of trauma, it can result in brain damage that will affect hearing for life.

A loud explosion, occurring to one side of the worker, can also cause work-related asymmetrical hearing loss. There are certain occupations, such as those within the mining, construction and chemical industries, which are more prone to this kind of accident than others.

Other kinds of chronic noise exposure are also cited as the cause of asymmetrical deafness.
Working in any job that involves a lot of shooting or one that involves working to a specific side of any persistent loud noise can, without proper ear protection, be an asymmetrical deafness hazard.

Failure of an employer to provide suitable protection can result in them having to pay compensation to workers who have developed noise induced hearing loss.
