Ship building, heavy industry and noise induced hearing loss claims

Heavy industry, such as steel production, coal mining, automotive manufacturing and the railways, has some of the highest incidences of noise-induced hearing loss of all employment sectors.

Shipbuilding in the UK typically employed a large amount of people for many years and many of them may have suffered noise-induced hearing loss as a result of the processes involved in the industry.

Due to the large-scale nature of many shipbuilding processes and the use of heavy machinery such as cranes and lifting and welding gear there is always a risk of high levels of noise in a shipyard. Moreover, the risk of acoustic shock, from sudden loud noises, is increased if processes of aligning steel plates and lifting heavy ship's equipment do not go to plan.

In 2010, no win no fee solicitors from Stoke-on-Trent held open days at the Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness to investigate the likely instances of noise-induced hearing loss among people who had worked at the Barrow Shipyard.

Around 200 people went to the open days and, of those, 120 employees and former-employees were required to undertake a hearing test.

A solicitors' spokesperson said 99 percent of the people who had come forward to have their hearing loss claim investigated had worked at the Barrow Shipyard at some time or other.

She suggested at the time that they were likely to proceed with 50 to 60 claims. All claims would be handled on a no win, no fee basis assuring those with hearing loss that they would not be charged legal fees or have a fee taken from any awarded damages.

It was estimated that shipyard insurers could face compensation claims with a total value of around £250,000.

The Barrow Shipyard was owned by Vickers since 1897, but was taken over by BAE in 2003.
