Will magnetic fields help tinnitus patients beat the condition?
Treatments for tinnitus have seemed elusive so far, with their effects either indistinguishable from placebo or being only temporary. With over a third of the UK population suffering from the condition at some point in their lives, this is particularly bad news.
However, a German neurologist is experimenting with some success on the theory that this form of hearing impairment has roots in the auditory cortex, where the brain perceives the sound signals. His hypothesis is that sufferers have overactive brain cells in this area, and he is seeking to normalise this.
His method involves creating a magnetic field by running current through sections of wire. The field, if placed correctly, should reduce the neural activity and diminish the unwelcome noises.
Results of his experiments do not show a statistically significant difference in single treatments of his magnetic treatment and a mock treatment, but do suggest a positive effect over time. There were no reported adverse side-effects. This partially promising result, however, may need further examination with a larger sample of patients before it can be considered scientifically proven.
Reports on the BBC News website state that many patients find the volume of their tinnitus has been reduced, and one person credits the treatment with a complete cure.
