Former members of the Armed Services may be able to make a compensation claim for tinnitus if their hearing loss is as a result of a military injury or action in a battle zone.
Training and serving, particularly in the Army, is bound to entail numerous stresses and strains on the body and those who sign up are aware of the need for maximum physical fitness to protect themselves from injury. However, their officers, and ultimately their employers, the Ministry of Defence, have a duty to keep them from unnecessary harm.
Tinnitus caused by gunfire or explosions is often a problem for serving and former soldiers who have experienced battlefield conditions and whose hearing has been affected.
When first joining the Army, recruits will be taught how to handle a variety of guns and the importance of handling them safety. They should also be provided with ear defenders for use both indoors and out and given instructions on their use.
Although standard ear plugs protect against the loudest sounds, they have the disadvantage for soldiers in a fighting situation that they may not be able to hear commands or warnings. On patrols, they may be unable to hear an enemy creeping up on them.
Soldiers are expected to use the ear plugs supplied but either through preference or in the heat of battle many do not use them. A significant percentage of compensation claims paid to Service veterans have been for hearing loss but this should reduce thanks to the introduction of sophisticated new models of ear protection.
The latest types bought by the British Army are similar to those used by pop singers who want to hear voices but not the overall amplified sound of their musical instruments.
These ear defenders with an integral microphone enable soldiers to hear commands directly in their ears but the louder external noise of gunfire is reduced to a safer level.
If this type of ear protection is issued and used throughout the Services it is expected to cut the number of cases of deafness caused by excess noise as a result of training or action.
