Labyrinthitis is a condition that is normally related to an infection - usually viral, but sometimes bacterial - and thus not likely to feature in a deafness compensation claim; but there are situations in which this is not necessarily true, and a sufferer may benefit from contacting a personal injury solicitor.
This is because one of the ways in which an inner ear infection may be contracted is through personal injury or trauma to the head. If this allows bacteria to enter the inner ear, infection may result, meaning that someone who is liable for a compensation claim for the head injury may arguably be liable for that claim if it includes labyrinthitis too.
The symptoms of labyrinthitis include dizziness, nausea, tinnitus and hearing loss.
The dizziness is related to the fact that the labyrinth, an organ within the inner ear, swells in this condition, and is therefore less able to fulfil its function of telling the brain how the head is moving. This means that the information received from the inner ear does not match that received from the eye, and the resulting biological confusion leads to dizziness. Nausea is an effect of this dizziness.
The tinnitus and hearing loss are also related to the swelling of the labyrinth; the parts of the inner ear are packed in a small area, and the inflammation can affect the hearing mechanism as it is nearby.
Labyrinthitis can be treated medically in most cases, but on some occasions can leave a sufferer with permanent symptoms of hearing loss, dizziness or tinnitus.
