Noise levels at landfill sites and industrial deafness compensation

Despite the regulations in place to keep employees safe and healthy in their work environments, many workers in the UK today might be exposed to noise which could lead to hearing loss and an industrial deafness compensation claim.

In the year 2000 the largest landfill site in the UK covered an area of about 1km by 2km and was filled with 1,000,000 tonnes of Britain's waste every year. In September 2010, people local to the area in which the landfill was located raised objections when the company in charge of the site made it known that they wished to continue using the site till 2025, after their original contract was due to finish in 2013.

Because of the varying sizes of landfill sites, the noise coming from a landfill can continue for anything from five to 20 years or more, and if an employee works long term at the site, they could be exposed to excessive noise levels every working day unless they are supplied with appropriate ear protection.

Hearing protection
Landfill sites operate through the use of large machinery which dig the landfill, bring waste to the site, compact the waste and eventually begin the reclaiming process by covering the waste with clay and earth so that plants can re-grow.

Heavy machinery is loud when in operation and ear defenders should be given to employees who work in or around the vehicles. It is an employer's responsibility to look after their workers' health and safety, or risk breaking legislation which has been set in place for that very purpose.

The hearing protection offered should be suitable for the noise levels in which the employee will be working and they should be trained how to use it correctly.

Noise may also be monitored by the company at regular intervals, for example, every three months. This might help to keep noise levels to a minimum so that not only are the workers less likely to suffer from hearing loss and subsequently forced to make an industrial deafness compensation claim, but members of the public in the surrounding area will also not be as disturbed by the ongoing work.
