Working in a food factory and industrial deafness compensation
There are so may noisy industries out there, such as the construction industry, the leisure industry and the military, that food and drink manufacturing could easily be disregarded as posing a deafness risk, despite the fact that it accounts for a fair few of the industrial deafness compensation claims that are made in the UK each year.
However, those that work in the industry will be well aware of the noise levels and the various potential work injuries they could sustain, or indeed have already sustained.
Musculoskeletal injuries, dermatitis, occupational asthma, rhinitis and work-related stress are just some of the conditions that someone who works in a factory that manufacturers food and drink could be exposed to.
Industrial deafness caused by noise at work, however, is one of the most common complaints but can be quite difficult to detect, as it occurs over time.
According to the Health and Safety Executive [www.hse.gov.uk/], the following nine processes are fraught with high noise levels:
| Process | Potential noise |
| Glass bottling lines | 85-100dB(A) |
| Product impact on hoppers | 90-100dB(A) |
| Wrapping, cutting wrap, bagging etc | 85-95dB(A) |
| Bowl choppers (pneumatic noise and compressed air) | 85-95dB(A) |
| Milling operations | 85-100dB(A) |
| Saws/cutting machinery | 85-107dB(A) |
| Blast chillers/freezers | 85-107dB(A) |
| Packaging machinery | 85-95dB(A) |
| Manually pushing wheeled (trolleys etc) | up to 107dB(A) |
Employers are required to take action under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 when noises exceed 80dB(A) and 85dB(A). Milling, drink production and the meat industry are estimated to be the most dangerous in terms of noise at work and the most likely perpetrators of noise-induced hearing loss.
Claims for industrial deafness compensation account for around 75% of all industrial illness claims, making industrial hearing loss one of the most frequently experienced workplace injuries.
