Noise Action Week 2009 was held from May 18 to May 22 and aimed to raise awareness of the problems caused by the kinds of excessive noise that might lead to workers making industrial deafness claims.
The annual campaign is organised by Environmental Protection UK (formerly known as the NCSA) and aims to involve all interested parties, including employers, employees, local authorities and community groups, in the drive to tackle the problems posed by excessive noise.
While much of this involves improving communication between occupational and community groups, it also relies on the discovery and application of "simple, practical solutions".
Events such as Noise Action Week are vital, and not only at a community level; after all the World Health Organisation has identified noise-induced hearing loss as the world's "most prevalent, irreversible industrial disease"
Yet it is this preventability and irreversibility that makes noise-induced hearing loss such a tragedy. Put simply, employers have it within their power to stop their workers suffering the kind of damage that results in conditions such as tinnitus; it is up to them to follow the prescriptions provided by both the Noise at Work Act of 1989 and the Noise at Work Regulations, thus ensuring that employees are suitably protected.
Where these responsibilities are neglected and employees suffer damage, whether it is an industry such as shipbuilding, textile manufacture, coal mining, engineering or hospitality, affected workers are likely to be able to make Industrial deafness claims.
