Industrial deafness claims and the "superfood" red wine
We're always hearing about supposed "superfoods" such as blueberries, broccoli and oily fish, yet it seems that red wine may also be close to qualifying for elevation into the "superfood" category. Of course, no-one is suggesting that anything but moderation is a good idea, but scientists at the University of Michigan Medical School have shown that the antioxidant resveratrol may be of benefit in reducing noise induced hearing loss, certainly information that will be of interest to anyone making an industrial deafness claim.
This is because oxygen-free radicals that damage the delicate hairs of the inner ear may in fact be neutralised by resveratrol, reducing the acuteness of hearing loss typical to claimants making an industrial deafness claim. However, there is good news for those who red wine doesn't agree with, as the same antioxidant is found in green tea, as well as there being a similar substance in aspirin, called salicylate.
The scientists gave antioxidants to patients who had suffered inner-ear damage as a result of an antibiotic called gentamiacin, which causes the same kind of damage as excessive workplace noise. The results showed that patients who were given antioxidant in conjunction with gentamicin had a significantly lower level of deafness than those who given the antiobiotic in conjunction with a placebo.
Although the study's authors said that the use of these antioxidants could not be shown to prevent hearing loss, it is possible that they may play an important part in reducing the level of hearing loss experienced by people with either age-related hearing loss or noise-related hearing loss.
