Industrial deafness claims and corporate responsibility to employees' hearing

While making an industrial deafness claim can help give sufferers the financial support they need to ensure they gain the best medical care for their hearing loss, prevention, as with most things, is better than a cure. One company that believes in this ethos was praised by Deafness Research UK in January 2010 for promoting the responsibility that employers have to protect their employees' hearing.

The international integrated energy and refining company, ConocoPhilips introduced a Year of the Ear program in 2010 to provide training to its staff on how to look after their hearing. The training included a 22ft working ear and used illustrations and audiovisual techniques to teach people about how to protect their hearing from damage.

Deafness Research UK's chief executive, Vivienne Michael, said, "Loud noise can unfortunately cause both hearing loss and tinnitus. Noise-induced hearing loss is a devastating condition, yet it is 100 per cent preventable if individuals understand why and how they should protect their hearing."

The charity praised ConocoPhillips for providing an excellent example to the industrial sector of a health programme that can have a real impact on its staff. Regional occupational health manager for the company at the time, Dr Grant Logan believed that the initiative was well received with employees. "We were keen for staff to receive important health messages in a lively and memorable way. It has had great feedback and has been extremely successful."

Industrial deafness and tinnitus are easily preventable work-related conditions. While ConocoPhillips has made a great example of how companies need to take their responsibility to their employees' welfare seriously, there are still many firms that are neglecting their duty to their workers' health and safety.

Safety training is key to help prevent industrial deafness. Simple measures such as the mandatory wearing of ear defenders in areas of loud machinery can dramatically reduce the number of tinnitus and work-induced hearing loss cases.
