Gaining support for industrial deafness and the work of Deafness Research UK

Those who have suffered industrial deafness can turn to Deafness Research UK for help and support with the problems that their hearing impairments may cause. Founded in 1985, the charity is dedicated to helping deaf people, and those who are hard of hearing, through medical research and education.

In 2010 the charity marked its silver jubilee with a royal ceremony in the State Apartments of St James' Palace in the presence of the charity's patron, His Royal Highness, The Duke of York.

The event was celebrated by researchers, supporters and those that have benefited from the charity's work over the years.

The charity works to fund research to improve the quality of life for everyone who suffers from a hearing impairment as well as help prevent and cure hearing conditions in the future through the extensive research it carries out.

As well as hearing impairments people have been born with, or have sustained through illness or injury, the charity also works to educate and raise awareness of industrial deafness and hearing loss caused by industrial noise.

On the charity's website, visitors to the site can find information about the causes of hearing loss along with treatments, and hearing systems available, plus updates on latest research projects.

In 2010 the charity launched the Auditory Centres of Excellence (ACE) initiative to expand hearing research teams in Manchester, Sheffield, Cambridge and Nottingham. Each ACE will advance research into childhood deafness, improving hearing aids and cochlear implants as well as developing more successful treatments of tinnitus and preventing hearing loss and restoring hearing.

Hearing impairment can have a huge impact on a person's life. When that hearing loss has been suffered due to excessive noise levels at work, a worker deserves to gain compensation for their impairment.

Simple measures such as adequate ear defenders can prevent against work-induced hearing loss and enforcements should be in place to ensure they are worn by employees subjected to excessive levels of noise.
