Research into problems associated with industrial deafness that is not total

Sufferers of industrial deafness brought about after working in excessively noisy environments or caused by a lack adequate hearing protection from high noise levels are able to make a personal injury compensation claim against their employer if the employer is deemed to have been negligent in their treatment of the worker.

Research into the effects of hearing loss and how the body copes with reduced physiological function is ongoing and results of a study, published in March 2009, appeared to show that the brains of adult animals suffering hearing loss have the ability to re-route the sense of touch into the areas of the brain that deal with hearing.

The phenomenon is known as cross-modal plasticity and suggests that a damaged sensory system can be replaced with one of the intact systems.

It has long been mooted that people who lose a sense, such as sight, find that another, hearing perhaps, is intensified, and the scientific ideology behind cross-modal plasticity aims to prove the shifting of electrical stimulus in the areas of the brain concerned; with the crossover and interaction of two separate sense areas showing up on MRI scans.

However, this cross-over can cause problems when hearing loss is not total, as the sensory stimulus can cause confusion in the interpretation of residual hearing stimuli.

Alex Meredith, a professor in the VCU Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, said, "Our study indicates that hearing deficits in adult animals result in a conversion of their brain's sound processing centres to respond to another sensory modality, making the interpretation of residual hearing even more difficult.

"Whether this becomes a positive feedback cycle of increasing hearing difficulty is currently under investigation, but these findings raise the possibility that even mild hearing loss in adult humans can have serious and perhaps progressive consequences."
