Tinnitus is not confined to elderly people or those who have suffered an industrial illness and various studies have proved that it can affect any age group, including young children.
However, children who have had the symptoms for a long period of time may believe that it is normal and not think to mention it.
If it is discovered that a child has tinnitus, the first step should be to make an appointment to see a GP to assess the significance of the symptom. The GP may then arrange to refer the child to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) consultant for further testing and examination.
For the majority of tinnitus patients, no particular type of medicine or cure exists for the problem, although if there is a specific problem, measures will be taken for the child to undertake the appropriate treatment.
A multi-pronged therapy for the symptom is the next step for those who need it, sometimes referred to as Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) in hospitals. It may be carried out by a doctor, a hearing therapist, an audiological scientist or audiologist.
The treatment programme can include a variety of components, including reassuring children that they are not alone in suffering tinnitus, explaining tinnitus, giving hearing aids, avoidance of quietness, and relaxation techniques.
Sound generators are also used to help relieve sufferers. Previously known as tinnitus maskers, the small, electronic devices are designed to be worn by a sufferer and distract them from the internal tinnitus noise. However, sound generators are not effective for all patients.
Many children with tinnitus eventually lose the symptom and rarely carry the problem into adulthood. Although tinnitus is fairly common in childhood, very few children are affected by it in the long term. However, seeking the right medical opinion makes therapy and support available for those who are suffering from it.
